Project Facts

  • Rebuild 109 miles of 69kV and 115kV transmission lines in Fulton, Herkimer, Oneida, Montgomery, Schenectady, and Schoharie Counties.
  • Fourteen substations would either be upgraded or newly constructed.
  • The average asset age on this line is 85 years old. Four lines in this project were constructed in 1927.
  • Project will create up to 1 GW of incremental headroom for the local transmission system

Local Benefits

  • At least 1,300 jobs supported, including 500-600 direct jobs in construction and operations
  • Up to $815 million in direct economic input during construction

This region has limited existing headroom—as low as 2.4GW in 2035 and 2.6 GW in 2042—resulting in the withdrawal of nearly 1.5 GW in projects from the NYISO queue due to congestion and interconnection costs.

Additionally, the Mohawk Valley Transmission Upgrade would support manufacturing and semiconductor supply chain development at three NY FAST sites — Johnstown Commerce Park, Highbridge (Schoharie), and Shad Point (Cobleskill).

Survey, Engineering and Design: Through Nov. 2033
Anticipated Construction Start: Through Nov. 2033
Anticipated Construction Completion: May 2034
(Assuming approval of Cycle One projects at the January 2027 meeting of the NYS Public Service Commission. This project is scheduled to take place in phases with rolling timelines.)
